Waterproofing: The Different Alternatives You Could Consider

Posted on

When you are engaging in construction in your home, whether in the form of renovations or perhaps erecting a shed in your yard, one of the crucial elements to consider is waterproofing. Without adequate waterproofing, the foundation of your structure can be seriously compromised due to water damage. Moreover, if the area is frequently exposed to water, you also stand the chance of developing mould. However, making a choice of waterproofing is not about selecting the first option you come across. The following are some of the different alternatives you could consider when opting for waterproofing

Liquid membranes

This type of waterproofing comprises a thin layer of primer coating and an additional two layers that function as a top coat.  It is made up of asphalt that has been modified into a polymer, which makes it highly flexible. The liquid membrane waterproofing will come in varying grades to facilitate different applications such as using a trowel, using a spray or using a roller. This type of waterproofing is one of the more economical options that you can consider. It should be noted though that it will increase the thickness of the surface that it is being applied on.

Bituminous waterproofing coatings

As the name suggests, this type of waterproofing alternative is made from bitumen-based products. It is also referred to as asphalt waterproofing. Therefore, you need to ensure that you do not use this type of waterproofing in areas that would be consistently exposed to sunlight, as the waterproofing will begin to crack and suffer from structural damage. Nevertheless, it makes a great waterproofing alternative if you are looking to protect a concrete foundation as it adheres perfectly to the surface.

Cementitious waterproofing coatings

This type of waterproofing can be formulated to be rigid or semi-flexible depending on what your needs are. It comprises a mixture of self-adhering components such as asphalt, fillers as well as polymers. Since it is self-adhesive, the waterproofing contractors do not have to apply an adhesive layer on the flooring before the waterproofing is applied. Nevertheless, if you would like to enhance its self-adhesive properties, you can have the waterproofing contractors incorporate resins and oils to the cemetntious mixture. It should be noted that once the waterproofing coating is ready, it needs to be applied as soon as possible. This is because is if it left to dry, it begins to lose its bonding properties.
